Women Are Better Drivers free essay sample

Critical thinking and writing. Essay # 4. Truth: Women are better drivers. Women have the reputation of being worse drivers than men. Some say that women’s driving is linked to their hormones, or they look too much in the mirror, or that they put make up while driving. Others believe that women are bad drivers because they text at the same time as driving, or they think too much about everything and cannot focus on driving, or simply because men are considered superior beings. However this reputation based on stereotypes, where men can do everything better than women, yet based upon statistics released show that women drive better than men. Researchers from the Social Issue Researcher Center released a study on male and female driving differences, reports show in conclusion that: â€Å"In all studies and analyzes, without exception, men have been shown to have a higher rate of crashes than women† (www. Men are more aggressive when it comes to driving, researchers explain. Reports show that men drive faster than women, and men are more likely to break traffic laws that are designed to make the road safer and driving easier for everyone. Therefore, men are causing twice as many fatal accidents than women. According to the same study, in the U. S. , 78 percent of road fatalities were caused by men; a figure that has remained constant since 1975. Researchers agree that men, especially younger men, have the tendency to drive more aggressively than women because males tend to be more of risk takers. Such behavior can be explained by the facts that males drive twice as much as women, and as a result, men think that they have more expertise than women. Consequently, because men drive more they feel confident about being better driver than women. But even if men drive twice as much as women, and driving hours are factored in, men still cause more fatal accidents than women. According to Anne McCartt, from the institutes senior vice president of research, accidents in which someone dies are more likely cause by men. www. sirc. org) Reckless driving is a major traffic violation since the driver disregard traffic laws and drives carelessly. Is the American Dream over free essay sample

The American Dream is the American ideal of a happy and successful life to which all may aspire. The American Dream is a belief that, in the United States, if a person wants something, they can make it happen. It’s the attitude that no one can hold a person back from their own personal dreams. If someone desires to start a company, and willing to work hard, they can achieve the dream. There is no racism, sexism, or discrimination that can place limits on wealth, stature, appearance or health. Any dream can be made real because of the freedoms we enjoy granted by our constitution and moral standards we as a nation live up to.Immigrants also that come to this nation to escape oppression from their governments around the world or just looking for a better opportunity can live free and run after the American Dream. However, slowly the American dream is becoming more difficult to achieve in our society. We will write a custom essay sample on Is the American Dream over? or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Opportunities for success are progressively diminishing because of the rapid expansion of government and its intrusion in our lives. I do not believe the American Dream is dead but it is more difficult to obtain. We may not need a college degree to achieve it but it will make it somewhat easier. The dream starts with individuals taking personal responsibility for their own lives, their own action and their own success. The dream isnt about getting rich. It is about working hard and intelligently which brings natural rewards. The American dream is liberty and self-government. We the people are free to choose what we want to do with our lives. Originally the American Dream was having freedom of speech and religion. It has evolved into personal prosperity which includes a family, home ownership and dependable transportation.Cal Thomass newest column is a controversial argument in the New York Times about the American Dream. Columnist Bob Herberts commented on Thomas’ column, However you want to define the American dream, there is not much of it thats left anymore(Herbert, 568-569). Thomas doesnt dispute the point, except to argue that the definition of the American dream makes a difference. He agrees that theres not much left of Herberts version of the American dream as opposed to the original dream, which remains for those who would embrace it. Herberts version of the American Dream is liberalisms American dream, which has proved unsustainable. Thomas equates the liberal American dream with an entitlement mentality that has produced a country of government addicts devoid of self-reliance, individual initiative and personal accountability. For Thomas, this is a dream in the worst sense of the word. People who believe a politician of whatever party or persuasion can make their life better than individual initiative are doing more than dreaming, he writes, such persons are displaying cult-like fa ith, which can never be fulfilled(Thomas, 569).

GutierrezS Analysis Of Book Of Job Essays - Book Of Job,

Gutierrez'S Analysis Of Book Of Job Frank Bottino Reaction Paper On Job: God-Talk and the Suffering of the Innocent (Synopsis) In Gutierrezs analysis on the book of Job, the justice of God seems to be the primary issue of his argument. Throughout his argument he justifies that Gods way of doing things is outside the comprehension of the human mind. He states that, God indeed has a plan, but it is not one that the human mind can grasp so as to make calculations based on it and foresee the divine action (73). In the book of Job, God tests Jobs faith by putting him through a series of trials and tribulations. Job initially doesnt understand why God does this because he has always been righteous in the sight of the Lord. His friends believe his suffering is a direct result from the sin in Jobs life but as the text explains, they are clearly ignorant. Job questions God directly, however God challenges him to explain how the universe was created and how it is ordered. Jobs error is his presumption that Gods ways and his omnipotence are humanly comprehensible. God both rebukes Job and makes his most direct reply to Jobs earlier question: What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? And what profit do we get if we pray to him? (21:15) Gutierrez states that here Job realizes he has spoken out of ignorance and that he may come no closer to God than his vision of him, therefore Job repents. In conclusion, Gutierrez main point is clearly that in order to understand God and his divine plan, one must avoid the temptation of imprisoning God in a narrow conception of justice (91). The book of Job reminds us that God is outside time and space and that He does whatever He wants despite what we as humans think is just. Personal Reflection I feel that Gutierrezs argument is right on target. As we have studied in previous chapters of the Old Testament, Gods way of doing things is not what we as humans would expect to be logical. For example, in Exodus we see that God chooses Moses to be the deliverer of the Israelites despite the fact that he is the second son, a murderer, and slow of speech and slow of tongue (4:10). This is strange because one would expect God to appoint someone of higher stature like his brother Aaron. Another example is seen in Genesis when God tells Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac. This seems illogical to us at first because it clearly goes against Gods promise to Abraham. Abraham soon realizes when an angle of God stops him that it was only a test of his faithfulness to God. However, despite Gutierrezs strong argument, I believe that sometimes Gods ways are predictable and logical. For example, we constantly see throughout the Old Testament that whenever the Israelites break their covenant with God, we can be assured that they will be punished. This is clearly seen in the book Samuel when Saul defies God and his reign is slowly stripped away from him. On the other hand, when one obeys God, it is reasonable to conclude that they will be blesses. For example, because David followed Gods instructions, he was certainly blessed. In conclusion, sometimes Gods plans are logical and other times they are not. Therefore we as humans should never assume to know what God is going to do next. And no matter what God chooses to do, we should not be surprised because He certainly works in mysterious ways. Religion

The Wizard of Oz essays

The Wizard of Oz essays When I think Heros journey, the first thing that comes to my mind is The Wizard of Oz. This to me is a heros journey. Dorothy plays a hero as well as Oz and the Scarecrow, the lion, the tin man and the witch of the east. Dorothy was a hero in many ways. She was the lions hero along with Oz when he wanted courage and the tin mans hero when he wanted a heart and the scarecrows hero when he wanted a brain. She helped them along the journey realize that they all had what they wanted but had to let it show. Dorothy in a way was Ozs hero; she helped him realize he wasnt as great and Godly as he thought he was. He had gotten himself a very high reputation and couldnt fulfill what his duties were, to grant her wish. The last hero to me in the story was the Great witch of the east. She was Dorothys real hero. The call in this story was when her dream started. When she was sleeping in her bed in her house and there was a huge storm that blew her house with her and her dog, Toto, away into the land of Oz. The house came crashing to the ground right on top of the wicked witch of the west killing her instantly with her striped stocking legs and red shoes hanging out. The little people of Oz came out singing and dancing thanking Dorothy looking at her as a hero. Then the witch of the East (a very beautiful witch I may add) comes to greet Dorothy and thanks her. Dorothy tells her what happened and how she wanted to go home so the witch told her to follow the yellow brick road to the great Oz. Along the way she has 3 different encounters, one with a scarecrow, one with a lion, and one with a tin man. They decide they would like to accompany Dorothy and go see the great Oz also and ask for a few favors themselves. This is where the threshold and the tests and ordeals of the story comes in... even though there were happy people with the death of the wit ...

JFK Inaugural Speech Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

JFK Inaugural Speech - Research Paper Example His personal and political convictions can be determined not just by reading the contents and evaluating the style but also be learning about the context. John F. Kennedy’s inaugural speech has been considered as one of the best ever made not just by an American president but by a world leader. Apparently though, the speech became famous not just because of its inherent characteristics but because of the man who delivered it. President Kennedy is one of the most enigmatic leaders in the 20th century. He was at the help of the US government when the country faced serious challenges coming from USSR at the height of the Cold War. One of the most prominent incidents that highlighted his effective leadership and diplomacy was the successful initiative on the nuclear test ban treaty in the aftermath of the Cuban Missile Crisis which he also handled well. President Kennedy did not pursue the ban merely due to his geopolitical views. He personally saw it as necessary as he explicitly pointed out when he said that the US owes it â€Å"because we are the only country that engaged in atomic warfare in the last war† (Schlesinger 453). ... A brief glance of President Kennedy’s life several years before he ran and won the presidency does give the readers or audience of the context of what he wrote and then spoken during his inauguration. President Kennedy’s inaugural address is best remembered by the oft quoted line â€Å"ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country† (1961). The reason why this line has been recognized as the most compelling part of the speech is that it departed from the usual practice of previous presidents who took their oaths and rendered their own inaugural addresses. Prior to Kennedy, it was expected of newly elected presidents to state the domestic and international policies that their administration would pursue while in office. In this regard, the inaugural addresses served as the reiteration of the promises they might have made during the electoral campaigns, assuming that these are what the public wanted which is why they were vot ed into office. The most commonly used formula for the inaugural address was to state the problems confronting American society and then to provide the audience a briefing on the actual steps that the new president and his administration would initiate to develop and implement effective solutions. As a result, this leaves the audience with higher expectations but at the same time instilling in them a certain degree of passivity. President Kennedy’s inaugural address, however, took a radically different approach to the methods of how the problems of the country and of the world could be resolved. There is not a single portion in the speech that mentioned what concrete steps

Gendercide Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Gendercide - Assignment Example From this essay it is clear that in order to save the women from facing this type of misery, the pregnancy is terminated. This is one of the main reasons that justify gendercide. The boys are also in a better position to protect their families and fend for them as compared to girls. A family is therefore much secured if they have boys as compared to girls .   Some of the religious roles in India can only be performed by men and hence the advantage of a family having a son as compared to a daughter. The levels of discrimination of women in India is also high due cultural believes and hence more justification for a son. This paper highlights that the strength of the research is on the use of examples and comparisons between different cultures and countries with regard to the problem. However, it weaknesses is the lack of adequate statistical data to support the findings. Some of the information is also too general in the paper. The qualitative methods have mainly been used in the rese arch and this has provided a lot of useful information with regard to the topic. The research was also based on specific populations like the Indians and the Chinese. Generalizing the findings therefore affects its outcome. The research provides more information to the healthcare workers including nurses on why abortion rates are high in some communities when the women are expecting a girl. In conclusion, it is evident that gendercide can be justified by cultural and economic reasons in India.
